Good piece, Cryn. Student debt relief is certainly in order. My favorite excerpt:
"We live in extraordinary times that call for extraordinary measures. Band-aid policies do no good when slapped on tumorous issues."
By the way, I do not like the phrase "student debt forgiveness" - for obvious reasons. It connotes that the debtors have committed a sin, for which forgiveness is necessary.
I am not a fan of the term "student debt jubilee" either. It gives the impression of a party or celebration. Although, if Congress simply allowed all student loans to be dischargeable in bankruptcy, I would be dancing in the goddamn streets. That said, this language is an improvement.
It's a shame that we need "sexy" language, in order to grab attention to a cause. In my view, it is best to simply push for "Allowing student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy proceedings - which is the case with gambling debts, credit cards, and debts associated with big-ass shopping sprees, etc.
Keep the pressure on these pigs.
