Another Quote By The President

In response to my quote about education made by the President, one of my readers, Ms. H, wrote:

"We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible."  - Barack Obama

She added under this quote:

Mr. President, with the deepest respect, I pushed education and my children got higher degrees. They both are in so much debt! My son is called 15 times a day by Sallie Mae and my daughter is done [with her] residency. . . praying each day her loans will not come due before her 5 years is done. Will they ever have kids, get married, or have a moment of peace? I can't tell you about the shame, betrayal, surreal, fear, and lack of hope. We need you to fix this. . . Please.

If you want to invest in education, then fine, invest in primary education so that everyone has an equal shot at merit based scholarships.

Or, if you want to encourage college enrollment, then give more merit and need based scholarships instead of federally subsidized loans.

I agree, BL1Y.

Obama was a University law professor collecting a fat paycheck making money on the backs of current graduates. Why should he change the system for current indentured loan students?

How was he "making money on the backs of current graduates?" I don't follow.

I doubt lecturers at Chicago get paid that much. Although he probably had an office and offices are not free.

Regarding Obama quotes. They are meaningless. The marketing machine carefully crafts messages to get you to vote. They sound great and uplifting, but that is about it.

On the upside, this quote is true and he has followed through on it. By keeping the federal loan system in full operation and expanding the Pell grants he will be able to guarantee everyone an education regardless of finances.

Now, repayment for that education is a different matter. He never said that we were entitled to an affordable education. He only forwarded the belief in the ability to get an education.

You're right, Anon. He didn't make a lot as a lecturer/professor at U. of Chicago (when I was attending there). He was comfortable. He's made it clear that if he hadn't written his two books, he and his wife would still owe student loan debt. That's just amazing to me. But I disagree with your last point. I will provide additional quotes from Pres. Obama to demonstrate why I think you're wrong. We should have access to higher education, and it should be AFFORDABLE. He's said as much, too.

Cryn still has faith in Obama. To me, he's a rerun of Bill Clinton. Yet another right wing empty suit who knows how to say the right words to the right people.

This is hardly a republic, much less a democracy. But, by all means, keep on writing letters to your "elected representatives," and keep voting for the Democrats or Tea Parties or whatever. Nothing will change until the ossified class and power structure of this country is dismantled and replaced by true democracy.

The analysis I made was of the quote you posted above. As far as I can tell his idea of affordable is the repayment based on income limits that go into effect on loans made after date X. If he were serious he would have bought up all loans outstanding and applied the 10% repayment to all federally backed loans.

However, he does owe a lot to Wall Street and the banksters. They contributed heavily to his campaign. Heck, they had a hand in FinReg and the credit card act as well.

To Anonymous who wrote: "Cryn still has faith in Obama." I think, in part, that's true. But I have my days. I will continue writing to our elected representatives, and I will keep raising holy hell. That's the only way we have hope!

Obama was more than 'just' a lecturer and made more than doc review teaching con law.
His paycheck and the bread on his table was a result of the crumbs taken from the mouths of the law students. He is still a shill for the banksters and Sallae mae.

It's "amazing" to me, too, since Michelle Obama was making over $300,000 in 2005. Even if her husband had made absolutely nothing, that salary should have covered any student loans either of them had.

From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School's Senior Lecturers has high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.
From UC website... just cut the BS out.

It's amazing that somebody would actually try to pretend Obama isn't rich like a bandit. No wonder why this country is so fucked. I bet the majority of the population truly believes Obama is middle class like them (hahaha) because he looks black. Obama is part of the elite class, he's never had to struggle in his life and he always would have succeeded far beyond the average person can dream of.

Obama does not care about the average person. Heck he has no idea what the average person goes through and how dismal prospects are. While he pushes healthcare reform that helps insurance companies and pushes "green" which cost taxpayers more money, he flies around on Air Force 1 to countries all over the world and has his cats flown around too.

What a joke. They're all one and the same, every last one of them. To get to the level that Obama is at you have to be an asshole and a hypocrite, plain and simple.

That's a shame that you feel that way. It's cynical to such a degree that I find it just sad. Luckily, we don't all have such low opinions of people like President Obama. We may be critical, but that's different than what you're expressing.
