Romney's Republican Nomination Speech: Student Loans Will Be HOT Topic This Election Season

This evening, Romney accepted the Republican nomination for President in Tampa, Florida. One thing is certain from reviewing pieces of his speech: student loans are going to be a huge issue this election season.

At one point Romney said, "Every new college graduate thought they'd have a good job by now, a place of their own, and that they could start paying back some of their loans and build a future."

Of course, for millions of recent graduates, that is not happening and the indentured educated class is well aware of this fact. However, I have already raised concerns about the possibility of Romney winning, especially given those he has chosen to oversee higher education initiatives.

I'm reviewing Romney's speech carefully and will provide more detailed analysis tomorrow. In the meantime, it is safe to say that he has hit on a major issue - the student lending crisis - but I am not confident that, if elected, he wouldn't do much in the way of coming up with viable solutions to the problem.

Marco Rubio spoke with seeming empathy of those with student loan debt too.

At least, these bastards are mentioning the issue. However, I don't anticipate that they will do much, if anything, to help student debtors - if elected.

In the end, this party's rhetoric focuses on the following themes: "personal responsibility," "hard work," "pulling yourself by your bootstraps," etc. (Of course, they also believe in BAILING OUT large companies when they fail, and pretty much guaranteeing that corporations will earn a profit.)

Student debtors, as a group, do not have much money to donate to campaigns. Nothing will happen, until it becomes OBVIOUS to the owners that these debtors cannot make fundamental or milestone purchases - such as owning a home or other large items.

As usual, I appreciate Nando's candor!

I agree - it's good to hear that Romney (even if by desperation) has somehow "swayed" in the direction of recognizing there is a problem. In the past, he's been cold-hearted about it in my opinion. His "Borrow from your parents" remark was so insensitive.

I wrote the Romney campaign a couple of weeks ago and shared my own story. I know they don't give a flying rat's behind about me, but I thought, "Hey, why not?" I'm glad to see that this will actually be a hot topic. Frankly, I don't believe that Romney OR Obama will do anything about student loans until it's too late (wait, isn't that now?). Our government has always been reactive when it comes to the welfare of the citizens. Tragedy has to befall many before they react. But again, at least they're recognizing this crisis.

Cryn, I look forward to your deeper analysis of this speech. I plan to contribute to the AEM fund in the future. While this sounds pathetic, I am living so paycheck to paycheck right now, that I cannot guarantee I'll have funds in my account, no matter how pitiful the amount may be, every month for the withdrawal. The last thing I need is to have overdrafts added to my sad credit report (thanks to student loan debt to income ratio). Thank you for what you're doing for all of us.

How can you have bankruptcy when all the retirement funds are invested in SLAMS?

But Clint Eastwood was pretty derisive of Obama's stops at campuses to talk about student loans.

That guy fucking blows.

Well, we just need a solution to the student loan issue not a political speech using such issue to win over the other in the election period. I Hope someone can end up our economic crisis.
