Education Department Press Secretary Justin Hamilton said in a statement to The Lookout that the department 'does not execute search warrants for late loan payments.' He said the Office of the Inspector General 'conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds.' Hamilton said the department cannot comment on this particular case until the investigation is over [my emphasis, but did add that the claim the warrant was executed for late loan payment is untrue.

Then why not give the basis for the warrant if "the claim the warrant was executed for late loan payment is untrue?" Judicially ordered warrants ARE public records, after all (unless they are sealed to protect anonymous informants, but then it is usually just the name of the informant sealed).
Cryn - I hope that you continue to pursue this story. I for one would like to make sure that the Dep't of Ed isn't just giving a b.s. story. I would like to know if in fact there was some type of fraud or embezzlement that necessitated the use of force in this manner or if this is merely a sign of things to come, i.e., reinstitution of debtors' prisons and jack-booted thugs knocking down doors at 6:00 a.m. while in your boxer shorts.
thugs knocking down the door shall not be tolerated in this USA. The warrant had no warning that the house may be occupied by armed and dangerous citizens. No need to have a bunch of Federal thugs damage property and detain people. Does anyone see anywhere in that warrant where anyone was given permission to bust down doors and detain people? And related...I have a hunch that the wording on the warrant is lip-service. Would anyone do this to a rich powerful wall street executive?? (they should).
