For an unsparingly truthful history of how and why most of the American "patriots" fought in the War of Independence, go and read "Patriot Battles" by Michael Stephenson.

Even in 1776, most of the soldiers in the American Army (and militias) enlisted because of personal financial desperation.

After the new USA "won" that essentially civil war, the USA defaulted on its promises to pay the rank and file veterans.
